The War

The war in Ukraine has been going on for over two and a half years now with no evidence that it is coming to an end. In February 2022, Putin’s army invaded Ukraine. Putin had already taken the Crimea in 2014 whilst the West was unprepared. According to Wikipedia, the current invasion is the largest conflict in Europe since World War II. As of 2024, Russian troops are occupying about 20% of Ukraine. From a population of 41 million, about 8 million Ukrainians have been internally displaced and more than 8.2 million have became refugees, creating Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II. In July 2024, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner (OHCHR) for Human Rights verified a total of 35,160 civilian casualties during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since the current conflict began. But OHCHR says the real numbers could be higher.

Putin continues to prosecute the war with the attacks on Poltava and Lviv in early September 2024. In Poltava kills at least 41 people were killed and 206 people injured. In Lviv, at least 7 people, including a baby and 2 children, have been killed.

At the same time, the cause of Ukraine has largely dropped out of the main news. This autumn and winter, Ukraine is going to suffer an onslaught from Putin’s army. This is set against the backdrop of potentially massively reduced support from Germany and the potential for a complete change in policy if Trump gets elected in the USA.

Ukrainians desperately need military and civil aid. We hope that US, UK and EU countries will ramp up their military aid to help Ukraine to defend itself.

Civil Aid is needed now!

The list of civil aid is long. The good news is that there are lots of organisations in the UK who are donating everything from ambulances to blankets. This website aims to signpost civil aid groups and charities. Here you can follow links to donate, get information, updates, and find ways you can volunteer.
